St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (Lawrence, KS) was originally founded in 2002 as St. Sophia Orthodox Church in the Bulgarian Diocese of the OCA under the omophorion of the late Archbishop Kirill.
After the repose of Archbishop Kirill, the parish was transferred to the OCA’s Diocese of the Midwest under the omophorion of the late Archbishop Job and was renamed St. Nicholas.
The community began as an outreach ministry to the University of Kansas but soon grew into a mission. The mission met for a number of years in a commercial storefront a few blocks from KU’s campus and from downtown Lawrence. On the feast of St. Nicholas (Dec. 6) of 2011, we moved to the Ecumenical Campus Ministries building on the campus of the University of Kansas, where we held services for about 1½ years. By God’s grace we acquired about 3 acres in the heart of Lawrence in the summer of 2013 and celebrated our first service in a large house on the property for the Nativity of the Theotokos.
Our priest, Fr. Joshua Lollar, came to the parish in the summer of 2011 after completing his M.Div. at St. Vladimir’s Seminary (2006) and a PhD in Greek patristics at Notre Dame (2011). Fr. Joshua lectures part-time in the Religious Studies department at KU.
We sponsor an active OCF ministry at KU, of which Fr. Joshua is the chaplain. The OCF meets weekly for fellowship, discussion, and encouragement. The group recently completed a service project at Reconciliation Services in Kansas City, MO, along with the OCF from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Our parish also serves monthly at a local soup kitchen.
In addition to acquiring property for services and fellowship, some highlights of the last few years include retreats given by Dr. Al Rossi of St. Vladimir’s Seminary (Lent 2012) and by His Grace Bishop Maxim (Vasilievich) of the Diocese of Western America of the Serbian Orthodox Church (Lent 2013), as well as visiting talks by Fr. John Behr of St. Vladimir’s Seminary (Summer 2012), Dr. Jeff Wickes of St. Louis University (Lent 2014) and Dr. Vitaly Permiakov of Holy Trinity Seminary, Jordanville, NY (May 2014).
